1 hour of sustainability: Celebrate Earth Hour’s 10th anniversary this Saturday

16th March, 2016

Environmentalists around the world will unite this Saturday, by switching their lights off to celebrate earth hour 2016. This year’s earth hour has been scheduled  between 8.30pm and 9.30 pm this Saturday March 19th, in one’s local time zone.

2016 marks the 10 year anniversary of earth hour, which began as a WWF inspired idea in Sydney in 2007 in response to Australia’s climate-sceptic government.  Since then it has become popularised across the world, representing a global wish to tackle climate change that is not constrained by space or time.  Individuals, communities, households and businesses are encouraged to turn their non-essential lights off for one hour each year.

While the turning off of lights was the initial concept behind earth hour, the movement has expanded into other realms.  The prime example of this is ‘earth hour blue’, a crowdsourcing and crowdfunding initiative which gives individuals a platform to support or fund environmental based projects.

Earth hour continues to grow in popularity, receiving endorsement from ambassadors, celebrities and politicians each year, and inspiring many to take part in the global fight for the environment
